How Long Does Therapy Take to “Work”? – Therapy in Barrie

How Long Does Therapy Take to "Work"?

When will I feel like therapy is “working”?

If you’re new to therapy or coming back to therapy after taking a break, you may be wondering: how long does the process take?

There is no straight answer to these questions because this journey is so rarely a linear process…and that’s not a bad thing.

Your individual background, dynamic with your therapist, as well as your commitment and motivation to the process can all play a role in when you’ll start to feel the impact of therapy in your life. But none of this guarantees a timeline because true growth isn’t something that can be forced; it happens naturally.

Think of this journey like being on a beautiful hike.

There are ups and downs and twists and turns as we navigate the pathways of our inner landscape.

We stop along the way to sight-see and appreciate things we haven’t paused to examine before.

There are moments when we stumble, get dirty, tired, frustrated, and want to give up.

We may backtrack and sometimes get lost.

Therapy

It's a journey.

One of the most exciting parts of this journey is that we get to discover new facets of who we are. As we release old narratives and expand into what’s possible for us, giving ourselves the time and space to explore and nurture these new parts is integral. In the midst of learning about who we are outside of the stories we’ve always told ourselves, we must simultaneously take the time to process our old experiences and feelings in order to feel safe enough to move on from them.

This journey can feel like a lot. And oftentimes, it is. But don’t let that stop you from embarking on it. Because the view at the top of the hike is absolutely breathtaking and there are always more stunning views to uncover.

When you’re in therapy, remember that this is 100% your journey. There is no timeline or deadline. There is no one to compare yourself to.

As well, know that therapy alone doesn’t guarantee a fast track lane to healing. It’s you who must do the work in the difficult moments. Resources and techniques, including books, podcasts, breath work, and meeting regularly with a therapist, are all there to support you on your journey.

But they can’t substitute the work you alone must do.

The journey requires us to build up our muscles of safety, trust, compassion, commitment, and patience. Just like going to the gym, you won’t see physical progress in one session. This work takes time as we build trust and understanding with ourselves. Showing up again and again for ourselves both in and out of therapy is how real growth happens.

Remember that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Except in this journey, there is no destination, just milestone after milestone - and that’s what makes it so exciting. Your growth and potential is limitless!

Therapy

Don't give up.

So in those moments where you feel like you’re making no progress or you want to give up, ground yourself in this truth: it’s all a part of the journey.

It is so worth it. And it’s completely yours.

A great therapist shows us where there is space within us to extend our capacity to be there for ourselves. The relationship you create with your therapist should be a safe space for you to unpack experiences, challenge your old beliefs, and feel seen and heard. Therapy can show us what’s possible beyond the things we’ve been clinging to.

The right therapist will create a container of safety and support so that you can blossom in your own time. At Words of Hope Counselling, we offer guidance through self-exploration so that life feels lighter, steadier, and easier to move through.

If you’re ready to embark on this journey, we’d be honoured to be a source of guidance and support for you.
